Auerhahn Schuhplatter Verein |
| |
The Schuhplattler is a traditional dance in which the men perform complicated jumps, slapping their thighs in time with the music,
while the ladies twirl, showing off their traditional dress. It is from this dance that we derive our name. We also perform other dances native to Bavaria, the mountainous southern region of Germany. Some of these dances may tell a story, such as a dating couple, or depict a trade, such as a miller or woodcutter. |
| |
Our verein or club, The Auerhahn Schuhplattler Verein, is a multigenerational club founded in 1979 by a group of friends and family who shared the common interest of German folklore, dance, music, and costume. We wear elaborate formal costumes patterned on those worn in the late 1800s in the Miesbach area of Bavaria, or simpler informal costumes, depending on the occasion. We have our own talented musicians to provide the music for our dancing. |
| |
| We dance at public events, such as MusikFest, as well as at celebrations and conventions hosted by similar groups. We are proud to have participated in competition at
"Gaufest". This biennial convention for Schuhplattlers was held in Philadelphia and attended by and individuals members of the more than seventy groups from across the U.S.A. and Canada, as well as friends and "colleagues" from Germany. |

Our Kindergruppe and Young Adults |
In the first years of our Verein, we did
not have enough children to form a separate Kindergruppe. The
handful of children involved at the time would occasionally perform with
the adults group. But over the years as our Verein and it's
members have matured, our Kindergruppe has grown to it's current
membership of approximately twenty children.
Many of our children begin dancing, both
at practice and performances, as soon as they are able to walk.
Our children travel with us to all festivals and they participate
in almost all of our performances. It is rare that you will see
our Verein at a function without our children. We believe that one
way to keep the children interested, is to help them develop strong
bonds of friendship with the children of other Vereine. this will
always keep them looking forward to the next Fest when they will see
their friends again. In order to help establish these friendships,
we have started an annual "Kinderfest" that various local
groups take turns hosting.
