It is with a deep sense of sadness that the Evergreen Club announces the passing of one of its family, Jean Long. Jean (Babel) Long Obituary - After a courageous battle with cancer, Jean B. (Babel) Long, 78, passed away June 28, 2015 with her family by her side. Born in Allentown, she was a daughter of the late William H. and Rachel (Mill) Babel. Jean married her high school sweetheart, Donald C. Long, in 1957 and celebrated 57 years of marriage. Jean graduated from Grand View School of Nursing as Valedictorian and earned a Bachelor of Science degree from Kutztown University, graduating sigma cum laude. She was an emergency room nurse at Germantown Hospital before working for Kutztown Area School District as an elementary school nurse for 25 years, retiring in 1999. She was a member of Palm Schwenkfelder Church and the Evergreen German Club in Fleetwood. Along with her husband, Jean is also survived by son, Douglas M. and his wife, Lori (Sipida) of Mechanicsburg; daughters: Deborah A., wife of Dale Stoudt, of Mertztown; Denise A. Long of Honey Brook; and Donna J. Long of Fleetwood; and grandsons: Derek W. Long of Mechanicsburg; and Bradley M. and Kyle C. Stoudt of Mertztown. She is predeceased by her step-sister, Florence (Babel) Martin. Jean will be remembered for her love of family, faith and friends. She always put others before herself and taught her children to do the same. She will be dearly missed. We would like to thank Dr. Suresh Nair of Lehigh Oncology, for without his treatment we would not have been able to spend another nine years with our mom/wife. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in Jean's memory to the Kidney Cancer Association, P.O. Box 4668 #38269, New York, NY 10163-4668. (www.kidneycancer.org). I apologize for not updating the web site as much as it should be updated, but with all the other stuff going on with the club it can be quite time consuming. One aspect of the site was the German Sentence and word of the week. It seems like there was not much interest in this feature so I stopped updating it. If anyone would like me to start doing this feature again please let me know. Also, I am hoping to get a better handle on the menu and bar sections. At this point, our menu changes quite frequently so it is hard to keep up. The bar menu is pretty stable so I should be able to work on that. If any member has a suggestion or something they would like to see on the web, please email me at Brian@evergreenclub.org. Thank you.

Having events every day of every weekend is very taxing on the few volunteers we currently have. Out of five hundred plus people we generally have about eight or so whom regularly show up on Friday mornings to clean the grove and ready it for the nights entertainment. Each of these people will tell you they don't mind doing their share, but with the extra days they wouldn't mind spreading out the load. So what do we need? Basically we could use a group of two to four people to do a walk through of the club on Saturday and Sunday mornings. This would take about an hour and would entail; picking up loose trash, ensuring the trash cans are emptied and bagged, ensuring tables and chairs are in order and wiping down the outside bar. During events where we charge a cover, we need people to collect at the entrance areas. Usually it helps to have 2 at each entrance. These individuals, or any who volunteer more than 4 hours at any one event, will be entitled to either four beer chips or one half-priced meal. For our bigger events like Alex Meixner, Berks History Tour, German American Day and Readingstock we will also need runners, beer trailer attendants and parking attendants. There is a lot going on this summer and any time you can give would be greatly appreciated. Now, all that said, to make it easy for members to donate some of their time we have constructed a book with sign up sheets listed by event and needs. This is also a good way to get your school aged child some community service hours. Especially, with the fund-raising events such as Readingstock this June 13th. So come one out, have a beer, go through the book and help out your club. We can only have these great events with your help and support! Prost!!
